McDonald's: Day Three

Although I have some McDonald's experience from my youth, I consider myself new to the industry. This means that along with learning the personalities and the politics at a new job, I have to learn procedures as well. The second element is thankfully of minimal presence at our store.

On first read, the crew and management staff seem to be in order. I am especially thankful for the excellent crew we managers enjoy. I have yet to notice an improper attitude among them. While some are quick at performing their duties, others are unbelievably fast! Our DT times are nearly always at or better than the target speed of 90 seconds.

Today's sales were a bit low. As you will learn, these are my least favorite days. Labor gets way out of hand, the crew is harder to keep on task (at our store this has not been a problem), and time crawls by. Although these days are an opportunity for detail cleaning, sales are king.

I am primarily a closing manager. I decided that this fits me best as I love to teach. I feel as though I am in a unique position to help educate youthful employees about work ethic. Many of my employees will move on to college and then the professional environment. It is my hope that they will be able to think back to their experience at McDonald's and know that it helped prepare them for work at a higher level.

I spent my entire day working service. I enjoy this most because I can learn the store procedures more quickly than if I were to work production. The sandwich line-up has not changed dramatically since my tenure with McDonald's seven years ago, so I believe when the time comes for me to learn production (likely sometime this week) I will be able to deliver.

This was, overall, a great day at work. I enjoyed my shift and learned plenty. DT only got out of hand once; only for two or three cars. Not bad! I will conclude this post by posing a few questions to the forum:

Do you believe your position at McDonald's affords you opportunity for growth, personal and/or professional?

How do you feel about customer service, particularly when there is a problem?

How much does intra-store politics play a role in your store, especially among manager interaction?

Welcome!

Hello! My name is RC and I am a McDonald's Swing Manager in Houston, Tx. I am a recent college grad (BSBA - Information Systems Management) who has taken a job with McDonald's in hopes of getting some hands on 'in-the-fire' style business experience. I believe this will prove invaluable as I progress through life in the world of business. This forum is intended to be a place for franchise employees as well as franchisees to discuss their work experience, learn more about their job, or maybe even vent after a long hard day at 'The Machine.' I will make an effort to post most days after work (as my social life permits).
